I was one of the NG units deployed, B Co. 3/160th Infantry (M). I was a little sacred, we all were. Nights were long, days were longer in the heat of East LA on Washington Blvd. People were nice. We were shoot at. One day we were trying to rest in a school gym were a large mural of Oscar de la Hoya was on one side. We were a little uptight and were sleeping on the floor. Suddenly, a large bulb from the gym popes. Everyone reached for their weapon and locked and loaded. The LTs and NCOs came in and calmed us down. Tense moment.

Thanks for the photos and text about the 1992 L.A. riots. For me the most intense image is the one of the cop holding the "bayonet". I'd love to see the photos of South Central that you took before the riots.

You did a real good job with the photos of the L.A. riot. The photos of the lady pleading against the cops, the family that lost their printing business, and the homlessman giving the finger to the cop, they put me to tears for a long while. There's still a lot this country could learn from all this... Keep up the good work.

I have discovered this site today and have introduced close friends to it who are with me trying to spread this New York "magical music moment" across the Pacific ocean to Manila, a surprisingly fertile musical soil that is very receptive to it. Your site captures in photos various aspects of celebrating life and freedom, whether that is basking in the aura of a live jazz performance or participating in an act of dissent against oppression. Fine work. Pls keep it coming. Elian

Your eye is the stuff Willie Mays, Rod Carew, & Hitters who hit .300 know. It's about patience...watching..waiting for the right moment then in an instant, capturing..Baseball as life...It has it's own rhythm just like music. Rhythm R-e-p-u-b-l-i-K(K on end just like K-regg) since 1990...Now & forever, long as the lead singer is alive & doing movement work. 2003, I intend to push the world as far & fast as it can go & then some. "Kosmic Bruvas"(tm)Trademark. Definitely something to remember nationwide...Stay tuned
Rhythm Republik, 2003 Eric "Pearl" Wilson - Keys & Musical Director David "Wildstar" Council - Drums & vocals(seen in other pics in black hugging Tanya with) John Willis - Guitar(featured in most of UR pics) Clyde "Nip" McPhatter - OG Guitar 2 return soon. Mark Bass - Bass(tallest person in group in traditional African robe U C,..in black w/Kufi) Niki Robinson - vocals,...from Chesterfields/Julie Dexter* Stacy Lee -vocals,....from the Funky Meters in New Orleans primarily, relocated to NYC* *-TBA, pending Willie G - Saxophone A.Lee Russell, Jr. -Trumpet, Flugelhorn ...As I'm sure U are more than well aware of...Tanya is no longer in the group. Your site is extraordinary - everytime I visit, it looks better and better. But of course, I have a propensity towards bias! That aside, I agree with Helena Lewis - you need to put a photo of yourself on the site - so that people will stop confusing you with JS (Smile). Great work that keeps getting better.

Dear UrbanVoyeaur...these featured photos have filled a rather hollow void. I recently relocated from Brooklyn to LA in search of sunnier skies. Instead, I found shallow minds and irregular hearts. Complaints aside, I can feel the 'riddims' of SOB's and 'comfy' feel of the other venues featured. There's no place like NY! Thank you for making me remember that!! Kudos to your artists whose careers I will gladly follow. Queen Ameenah (sp?), I look forward to hearing/seeing you on October 17th @ The Five Spot!!
