Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don't see any photos of a particular artist or show? Send me an e-mail and tell me what you are looking for. If it is an artist or show that you know I have photographed, the most likely explanation is that I just haven't caught up yet. It takes a while to get an images from a show to the web. The film must be processed. Then it has to be sorted, scanned, adjusted and added to the site. Check back, or send me an e-mail and I will notify you when they go up. It may also be that there were no images of that artist or show that I like enough to post. If you are a manager, promoter or the artist, send me an e-mail and I will get the additional photos I have of them to you. There are also lots and lots of artists I don't know about. Please send me an e-mail and tell me about them.
Why don't your photos show all of the band members? Send me an e-mail and tell me what you are looking for. It is not an intentional slight of any musician. I was simply not able to get any good shots of them yet - in fact, I may have photographed them and just wasn't pleased with the way they came out. If you are a manager, promoter or an artist in that band, send me an e-mail and I will get the photos I have of that musician to you. Drummers are especially difficult for me to shoot well because they are usually in the back and are often poorly lit or partially obscured. To shoot them they way I'd like often requires access to the stage or stage wings during a performance, which is not possible most of the time. As I shoot a band more than once I will try to capture them on film. I think that dynamic, beautiful images can be made of every person in almost any situation - I just may not be able to do it at a particular show.
Most of these photos are from last year or earlier. Don't you have anything more recent? Yes I do! I've added some recently and I will post more in the coming weeks, as I get caught up. Check back in a couple of weeks.
I see you at almost every show. Is this all you have? No. I have lots more. Too much to post, and many, many photographs that are just plain bad and will never see the light of day. I only post the photos that resonate with me and add to documentary statement of a particular collection. There are many perfectly good photos that will never be posted on the site, simply because I have to draw the line somewhere. If you are a musician or promoter and want to see what else I have, send me an e-mail.
How do you find out about these shows? You can check the Black Rock Coalition Calendar on this site. I also receive e-mails from the Black Rock Coalition, Sista Factory, August Fifth Studios, friends and various artists. Visit one of these sites or come check out a show or two, and get on a few lists!
How do I let you know about an upcoming show? Send me an e-mail, and if it is within the scope of one of my documentary projects, I'll be there.
I am an artist depicted in one of your photographs and I don't like the image. What should I do? I am not seeking to embarrass, offend, or denigrate anyone. I do want the images to reflect the energy and beauty of world that I see. I do select images that resonate with me, and they often contain expressions of emotion or interesting gestures, and sometimes unusual angles. If you see an image of you that you don't like let me know, and I'll take it down. If I am particularly fond of it, I may try to convince you to let me leave it up, but ultimately I will accede to your wishes.
How do I get a print for my desk or wall? I do produce a very limited number of exhibition quality prints. Tell me which image you are interested in, and the size, and I'll let you know availability and price.
I'm an artist depicted in one of your photos, video or audio clips and I'd like to use it. What should I do? Send me an e-mail and tell which photos you want. If you need it for another website, save the images, audio or video clips you want from this website - and send me an e-mail - I like hearing about things like that. If you need higher resolution images, video or audio for printing, publication or distribution, I will either provide you with a link to download the high res files or provide you with a CD/DVD, depending on fast you need it, and how big the files you need are.
How much will it cost? There are no licensing or usage fees if you are an artist or manager of an artist depicted in one of the photos, video or audio clips. If you need a print or slide for a publication there will only be the lab charges. I generally do not charge any fees to put the photos, video clips or audio clips on CD or DVD
What if I'm not one of the artists in one of your photos, video or audio clips, but I like the it and I want to use it? Photos: Send me an e-mail and tell me which ones you want. If you want a photo for a personal screen saver or desktop image, save it from the web site, and send me an e-mail - I like hearing about things like that. There are no fees. If you want to publish a photo in any other way, there are licensing fees involved. The amount depends on the final product - internet, magazine, book, flyer, t-shirt, etc - and whether the use is commercial. The fees are really quite modest. Send me an e-mail and we'll figure what you need and how much it will cost, and the best way to get you the resolution you need. Please note that all of the images on this site are Copyright Jose Ivey, 1990-2005, inclusive. No image may be used or reproduced without my express written consent, except where noted above. Video & Audio: Neither the video nor audio clips can be used outside of this site. Feel free to post links to the audio and video clips on this site, but please do not post the audio and video files anywhere else. The artists always retain the copyright of the music in the video and audio recordings on this site. These clips are displayed here with their permission. You must obtian their consent to use these video and audio recordings anywhere else.
You're a photographer. Why are you making audio recordings? First and foremost I'm a documenter. Though I work primarily in visual media, I have for years wanted to capture the sound of live the music I see. I sometimes get it as by-product of shooting video, but lately I've wanted to do a better job of with dedicated audio gear. I think it is important to have a record of these times and the music that is all around us - just at the edge of the public's awareness. We won't always have this beautiful, raw, vital music with us; it will change, into something equally arresting, but different. And as with the photographs, I want slivers of the experience to live on a little longer. I don't record - "bootleg" really- live shows for any other reason than the love of the music and wish to document. I only record when I have the permission of the artist or the event organizers, and will not record if anyone objects. I always give the original files and a mastered CD to the artists. As with the photos, I don't charge for it and the artists may do whatever they want with the recording. I don't sell these or distribute them, and really don't plan to put them on the site unless the artist specifically requests it.
How can I get copies of the audio recordings? You cannot get them from me. I have permission to record for documentary purposes, but not to distribute the music. The artists always have copies of the audio clips I post here, and you should contact them to get copies.
